Residential Architect Reinvention 2009 Conference
Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Reinvention 2009
When will the economy get better? Or will it—heaven forbid—get worse? So much of what we felt we knew is unknown to us now. No matter which way the Dow points, one thing is for sure: How architects work and with whom are changing at lightspeed. The model for nearly everything you do is being rewritten. Leaner and smarter staffs; more productive and entrepreneurial collaborations with other people and other companies—these are the orders of this new day. It’s not just “more with less,” it’s also “more with more”—more complexities, risk, and innovation than you ever thought possible.
Join us for the sixth annual Reinvention Symposium and find out how architects are already redefining the scope, capacity, and relevance of their practices. In the new economy, flexibility, engagement, and a solid grasp on value are all-important. Architects are uniquely poised to retool, rebuild, and reshape their communities from the ground up. In the next productivity boom, architects won’t just serve the same dull masters, they’ll blaze a new and better path ahead.

TBS Movie and a Makeover
Monday, June 1st, 2009

A few days ago, I spent quite a few hours at our first LivingHome in Santa Monica. I have to say, blogging from an Eames lounge chair is not a bad place to work!
We were filming TBS’ “Movie and a Makeover” in the LivingHome! I suppose this is not technically a makeover episode, since the house is already finished. We shot scenes throughout the entire house, showcasing the sustainable materials and efficient technology. They talked a lot about the opportunity to pick a standard LivingHome floorplan and customize it with different materials. In fact, modular closets and non-loadbearing walls can be removed or reconfigured throughout a LivingHome, allowing considerable flexibility for a changing household. I look forward to seeing that in the show!
There were nine crew and cast members here, plus Steve and me. It was interesting to watch; so many minute details have to be considered for the shots to be just right.
It should be a fun episode. It’s focused on affordable methods to achieve the sustainability and beauty of a LivingHome. I sure hope they pair the segment with a good movie! Steve voted for Star Wars.
