Sustainable Tip: Water Filters
Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Water!

Personally, I like my water estrogen-free. But we’re told that conventional plastic water bottles are made with a little thing called Bisphenol-A, which emits traces of estrogen into the water it holds. But this isn’t the only problem with Bisphenol-A; in high doses, it’s also been linked to prostate and breast cancers, diabetes, liver disease, and other bad things.

The simple solution to avoid all these troubles? Water filters! At home we popped a Brita filter on our faucets. It cost us $20 each and it’ll save us a lifetime of mood swings!

Sustainable Tip: Recycled Paper

Paper!

Using recycled paper probably seems like an obvious choice, but it’s still an issue—40% of landfill area is still filled with paper made from 900 million trees harvested each year. If you haven’t yet, please make the switch to recycled paper. And use both sides.

Here at LivingHomes, we print on Office Depot’s EnviroCopy line of paper, which is made from 100% post-consumer recycled products. Even our toilet paper, from the folks at Marcal, is made of 100% post-consumer recycled paper. How is it? Just cheeky.

A Cleaner Home
Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

There are few things I like less than soap scum on my dishes, and clearly, I’m not alone. At LivingHomes we’re currently using a company called Seventh Generation, eco-conscious maker of all types of cleaning materials. Not only do their products leave kitchen surfaces and dishes cleaner than Will Smith’s raps, their devotion to the environment is equally pleasing.

Take their dish washing liquid, for instance. It’s free of phosphates, but leaves behind no white film or soap scum because of the plant-based cleaning agents, which includes a corn starch derived water softener that maintains the pH balance. It’s even packaged in a plastic bottle made from 90% post-consumer recycled materials. Sounds great to us!

Check out more of the company and their mission and build your own LivingHomes kitchen—which you can later clean with Seventh Generation products!

Earth Friendly Car Wash
Friday, October 23rd, 2009

Most of the time it’s greener to do things the old fashioned way: by yourself. But every rule has its exceptions. The next time your car is looking dirty take it to a professional car wash. Commercial car washes require 45 gallons of water per car, while the average for a do-it-yourself job is 80 to 140.
