LivingHome’s KTLH1.5 house received top honors this month when the Green Dot Awards announced their recipients for 2009.    The KTLH1.5 LivingHome had the distinction of earning TWO awards, taking 1st place in the Design category and 2nd place in the Build category.  Designed to a LEED Platinum rating, the KTLH1.5 reflects LivingHome’s Z6 Sustainable Building Goals which outline 6 key objectives that we strive to achieve in both the construction and operation of each of our LivingHomes: Zero Water, Zero Energy, Zero Waste, Zero Emissions, Zero Carbon and Zero Ignorance.  This LivingHome was recently installed in Newport Beach, and will likely be the first LEED Platinum home in Orange County.

The Green Dot Award is an annual, international award competition that recognizes businesses, entrepreneurs, designers, and innovators that are focused on creating projects, products and services that honor the environment.  This year’s Green Dot Awards received over 500 entries from 25 countries for 8 different categories: transportation, design, build, products, services, entertainment + culture, other entries, and concept category. We’re totally honored that we were recognized this year – twice!  Go Team!

At the TED conference, we filled our Kohler LivingHome with furnishings and products made by companies that share LivingHomes’ commitment to sustainability.  Seventh Generation outfitted the laundry and nursery with non-toxic products that are sustainable and healthy for the homeowner.

Seventh Generation is committed to reducing their reliance on natural resources, reducing pollution, reducing the emissions of toxic chemicals into the environment, and making the planet safer. With a wide range of cleaning, feminine care, paper, and diaper products, Seventh Generation is one of the first self-declared “socially responsible” companies in the US.

Many corporations claim to be contributing to sustainability, but Seventh Generation sets itself apart from the crowds with considerable transparency and loads of informative details about the ingredients, manufacturing processes, and packaging of their products. They disclose all ingredients and components because they believe we, as consumers, have the right to know what makes their products safe and effective.

Seventh Generation fosters sustainability in three ways: by educating this and future generations, by offering a complete line of non-toxic household products, and through their non-profit donations program.

Education
To help consumers make informed choices, Seventh Generation includes information on their packaging, website, newsletter, blog, and announcements by the company’s Executive Chairperson.  In the Learn section of the Seventh Generation website, you can find healthy living and cleaning tips, read the company blogs, ask questions about the products, or discuss in the forum. Non-toxic Household Products
Seventh Generation only offers products that they believe are safe and effective.  They disclose all ingredients, explain all components of each product, and provide material safety data sheets for each product.  Products include: 100% recycled, non-chlorine bleached paper towels, bathroom, and facial tissues, and napkins; non-toxic, phosphate-free cleaning, dish and laundry products; recycled plastic trash bags; chlorine-free baby diapers, training pants, and baby wipes; and chlorine-free, organic feminine care products.  Seventh Generation participates in the EPA’s Safer Detergents Stewardship Program and is recognized as a Champion, the highest level, for its use of safer, non-polluting surfactants that break down quickly.

Donations Program
Seventh Generation offers 10% of their profits to community, environmental, health, and responsible business non-profit organizations.

Kristin Kilmer Design, Inc. is a full-service interior design firm based in Los Angeles. In Kristin’s words, her designs bring an innovative and eclectic viewpoint to her projects, while creating spaces that are comfortable and functional. She is especially passionate about the health of the individual, and uses allergen-free, non-toxic materials, fabrics, fillers, paints and finishes throughout her designs. After years in Marketing Communications, as a Production Designer for independent films, and time spent living and studying in Spain, Kristin has found her niche in Residential and Commercial Interior Design.

When she designed and furnished the interiors of the Kohler LivingHome, Kristin fully embraced LivingHomes’ principles of sustainability. Throughout the home, Kristin included furnishings and decorations made of recycled and sustainable materials. The reclaimed dining table was a big hit!

It’s based on Autodesk’s display at the Kohler LivingHome at TED and it’s a virtual walk-through of the LivingHome. The exhibit includes a special table monitor which displays a virtual floorplan of the LivingHome and a large projection of the LivingHome. You can choose materials and place them on the floorplan and the virtual LivingHome updates in real-time based on the materials you select! You can also change the placement of the sun to affect the lighting of the scene. You can walk in real-time through the virtual model by simply moving a model of an avatar. Your choices are displayed on a large projection of our LivingHome. The technology behind the display is the Autodesk Project Newport Mixed Reality Interface (MRI). The technology is intended to help visualize designs for buildings before they’re built. It’s really cool! Tell your Boston-based friends!

Rockin’ the International Builder Show, then TED.

The first LivingHome by KieranTimberlake (KTLH1.5) was built to serve as a show home for two conferences. It premiered in January at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas as the Builder LivingHome and then it moved to the TED Conference in Long Beach, where it opened as the Kohler LivingHome.
