LivingHomes Environmental Monitoring
April 20th, 2009

One of many cool options in a LivingHome is the LivingHomes Resource Monitoring System (LRMS), which allows you to examine the energy usage, water usage, and electricity production of your LivingHome in real-time, over the web. You can even see your savings in kilowatts, carbon, or dollars! LivingHomes worked with Lucid Design Group to develop the system.

The LRMS is the major strategy we use to achieve “Zero Ignorance”, one of LivingHomes’ Z6, the six environmental goal to which we strive for each LivingHome we build (to learn more, click here).

Even the most sustainably designed building can be wasteful if the people who live or work in the building make poor choices about how they use resources. That’s why Zero Ignorance is just as important as the other five zeros. Any system with feedback tends to improve and studies have shown that when people get real-time feedback on energy use, usage tends to go down by up to 20%. The LRMS does this. Bike to work

May is National Bike Month. We, at LivingHomes, celebrate it every month; on average, 30% of us bike to work each day!

Biking saves money on gas and car expenses, prevents emissions, and lessens traffic congestion. Besides that, it’s healthy, fun, and depending on your commute, faster!

Here are a few comfort and safety tips from our team for biking to work in an urban area:

  1. Check to see if your city has a map of bike paths and designated bike routes to make your commute safer and less stressful.
  2. Layer, since it can be cold, windy, and wet. Keep an extra change of clothes at work.
  3. If you think it might rain and you are parked outside, tie a plastic bag over your seat.
  4. Make sure your bike has fenders to prevent your tire from slinging mud onto your clothes and face.
  5. Wear a helmet to protect your head, and attach lights and reflectors to your bike if you plan on riding after dark.
  6. Always makes sure to lock your bike tires and frame to something secure.
  7. Get one of those squeaky horns with the tassles. They’re fun, old school, and can warn peds that you’re coming!

Rockin’ the International Builder Show, then TED.

The first LivingHome by KieranTimberlake (KTLH1.5) was built to serve as a show home for two conferences. It premiered in January at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas as the Builder LivingHome and then it moved to the TED Conference in Long Beach, where it opened as the Kohler LivingHome. At both shows we had four days to install and completely finish the home! To see pictures and videos from both conferences, click here.

Friends,

Happy new year!

Befitting of a new year – one, thankfully and appropriately, that should bring even greater focus on sustainable design and construction – we just shipped, last night, the first modules for our first KieranTimberlake LivingHome (pictured above)! And we’re introducing services for those of you who’ve asked us to help you create or renovate your own sustainable living spaces!

Introducing KT1.5, the first LivingHome designed by KieranTimberlake.

This is the first LivingHome we’ve completed based on the design of KieranTimberlake, the AIA 2008 Firm of the Year. The

KieranTimberlake single and multi-family LivingHomes feature a unique hybrid building system we’ve development. As with all LivingHomes, they include an extremely comprehensive environmental program based on our Z6 sustainability goals. They range in price from $185-250 square foot, not including transport or foundation.

This new 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 2,500 square foot LivingHome will be assembled in the next four days!! That’s right, FOUR (long) days!! It’ll reside in the booth of Builder Magazine, the official publication of the National Association of Home Builders and our partner for the conference, at the International Builder Show, January 20-23, in Las Vegas, the NAHB’s annual trade show.

We’re using the show to introduce our LivingHomes Builder Program, which is designed for builders and developers who want to offer LivingHomes to their local communiites. For more information about what we’re doing at the Builder Show, including a time-lapse video of the manufacture and eventual assembly of the BUILDER LivingHome, blogs and interviews with various staff, go to www.builderlivinghome.com.*This is a trade show and we’ll not guarantee we can assemble the home for customers in four days normally, but way, way fast, for sure!

Thanks to Kohler and other sponsors, after the Builder Show, we’re taking the LivingHome to the TED Conference (www.ted.com) in Long Beach, February 3-7, where I will give a short “TED Talk” on the home. The LivingHome will be open for public tours from February 8-20. There will be special events, including special Friends of LivingHome tours (you’ll get info on this soon).

Please note we’ll be selling this LivingHome after Long Beach and it’ll be a great deal for someone who has land and who wants a LivingHome. Details on this, too, soon.
